During the summer of 2021, Dr. Alex Gonzalez mentored Urbandale High School Teacher, Katherine Hanson, on a short research project studying the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) as a part of ISU’s Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Program. Katherine analyzed day-to-day satellite imagery over the eastern Pacific Ocean of precipitation and other observed data sets of surface winds and ocean temperatures using NASA’s Giovanni web-based application with a goal of helping improve our understanding of weather and climate variations in and near the ITCZ.
